Inclement Weather Procedures
Midlothian ISD closely monitors weather forecasts throughout the school year. Student and staff safety is at the forefront of our considerations. In the event of inclement weather, the district strives to decide whether to close or delay the opening of schools in a timely manner. Closure or delay announcements are released through the following outlets:
-
MISD text message alert system (Sign Up)
-
MISD Email notification to parents and staff
-
Announcement on www.midlothianisd.org
-
Posts on the district's social media pages
For the most accurate and timely information, we suggest parents and staff check their email, district social media channels or the district's official website at www.midlothianisd.org. The district will also inform television and radio stations. They share weather closure information at their discretion.
In the event that severe winter weather approaches during the school day, parents always have the option to pick their children up early.
How does the district decide whether or not to cancel or delay school during inclement weather?
The safety of our students and staff always drives the decision. The first consideration is the road conditions, both in the Midlothian area and for our faculty members who are driving in from outside the city.
A second consideration is the forecast for the day. We want to be sure our students and staff can arrive and return home safely. If a storm is predicted to arrive during the school day or if icy conditions are not expected to be alleviated during the course of the day, we take those considerations into account.
Third, we check our buildings to ensure that heating units are working and to check for burst pipes. Our maintenance staff also assesses icy conditions on sidewalks and in parking lots. They work to contain any hazards ice may create.
Regarding timing, the decision on whether to open, close or delay schools is always made with safety in mind. We strive to make a decision by 6 a.m. and post announcements on www.midlothianisd.org, MISD social media pages, and through parent emails. We also inform television and radio stations.
