Women's Equality Day
Midlothian ISD celebrates Women's Equality Day on August 26. It commemorates the ratification in 1920 of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guaranteed women the right to vote. Women's Independence Day shall be regularly observed by appropriate programs in the public schools to inspire a greater appreciation of the importance of women's suffrage. In MISD, examples of this day's recognition at elementary and secondary levels are outlined below.
At the elementary level, a campus encourages students and staff to wear purple on August 26 to honor women's equality. A high school will display women's equality books for students, post an infographic, and provide curated resources for teachers to access and utilize. In one of our MISD middle schools, campus announcements honoring this day will be made, and campus marquees will display recognition of the day. Resources are also posted on library websites and available to all staff for use in their classrooms.
