FAQs help explain implementation of new state law banning devices at school

Beginning August 13, the first day of school, all Midlothian ISD students will follow the new state law that prohibits student use of personal communication devices at school during the instructional day. The goal and intent of the new law is to increase student focus on learning by minimizing distractions. We anticipate that a cell phone-free learning environment will have a positive impact on school climate, mental health, and student safety.

The district has created Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to help answer questions about the new law and procedures MISD will follow, including the use of storage pouches for grades 6-12.

Policy summary
All Midlothian ISD students will be required to silence and store their communication devices during the school day. This includes keeping cell phones, Bluetooth earbuds, smartwatches, tablets, radios, pagers, and any device capable of telecommunication or digital communication, silenced and stored out of sight. Students in elementary school are encouraged not to bring devices to school. Middle and high school students in grades 6-12 will store their devices in a storage pouch that the district will provide on the first day of school. Larger headphones should not be brought to school.

The school supply list includes headphones and earbuds that are wired devices for use only with district-issued computers. The law provides school districts the ability to grant exceptions with documented medical needs, 504 or IEP accommodations, or other health and safety requirements.

One common question some parents have had about the implementation of this new state law is how they will be able to communicate with their child during the school day. All MISD high school students have a district-issued Chromebook and student email account, and parents will now be able to email their high school student via their school email address. Parents will also continue to be able to leave a message for their child by contacting the school. Students will be able to use their phones before entering the school building and directly after the final bell.
