Alexandria Hurst receives Jean Coleman Award

The Jean Coleman Award for Excellence in Reading Education was awarded to Irvin Elementary second grade teacher Alexandria Hurst at the MISD Board of Trustees September 18 meeting. The Coleman family generously funded the award three years ago in loving memory of Jean Coleman who was a second grade teacher in Midlothian ISD for 25 years. Her son Bruce Coleman attended the school board meeting to help honor the 2023 awardee.

Alexandria Hurst came to MISD as a first year teacher in 2020. She explicitly teaches reading skills, both whole group and small group, to ensure the needs of each student are met. Her peers describe her as dedicated and passionate, willing and excited to help her peers or to make time for anyone needing help, and she does whatever it takes to make sure a child is successful. She is also described as a teacher who puts in the extra effort for students, her team and her school. Hurst will receive a $250 award thanks to the Jean Coleman family.

Recipients of the Jean Coleman Award are nominated by peers and administrators for excelling in reading instruction.
